American Ballads and Folk Songs
Went downtown to see a moving picture, Stepped outside to get a glass of beer. Missed the last car, and when I seen the Sergeant, Had to go out and dig another "rear."
Ajid so on ad infinitum.
THE COMPANY COOK
The company cook had a greasy look, A nasty galoot was he; His only shirt was stiff with dirt, And his breeches a sight to see.
Chorus:
The cook, the cook, the company cook,
An autocrat was he;
With his pots and pans, and bottles and cans,
And his household crockery.
The fact of it is that the cooking biz In the army grades downhill; And the stuff we got to put in the pot Was too often fit for swill.
And a man with a bit of Yankee grit Would rather dodge the place; Who held the berth was no good on earth, Everlastingly in disgrace.
The one we had was a regular cad With a witless sort of look; A cross betwixt a mule and a 'tarnal fool, He was born for a company cook.
